Does it work? Dermatix® for scar reduction [1]

An investigation was carried out by Barbara Lantin from the Telegraph in 2005 into whether Dermatix® Silicone Gel can be used to help improve the appearance of scars, below are some extracts of her findings.

"A small scar in the 'right' place is worn with pride by some. But for others, it can be a disfigurement that causes low self-esteem, social isolation and physical discomfort. Some people are more prone to forming unsightly scars after a burn or an injury, surgery or acne. Can a new treatment help?"

"Current treatments include freezing, lasers, steroid creams and injections and silicone gel sheets that flatten scars and reduce their stiffness."

So what's new?

Dermatix® gel is applied from a tube twice daily for at least two months. It is thought to improve hydration to the scar, protect it from infection and possibly repel the cells that promote scar growth."

"In a multi-centre European study of Dermatix®, 76 per cent of dermatologists rated it as good to very good for reduction of redness, pain, elasticity, elevation and itchiness of scars. It was equally effective for mature and newer scars."
